Traditional Corsairs won by 3 wickets
Sky 116-5 (16 overs)
Traditional Corsairs 117-4 (15.3 overs)
Nimo Ahmed of Traditional Corsairs writes: On an overcast evening at Victoria Park, Traditional Corsairs and Sky met in this 'must-win' match for both team if either were to entertain any hopes of mounting a serious challenge for the League title.
As ever, Traditional Corsairs skipper, Nimo, lost the toss and Sky opted to bat. Traditional Corsairs started the game one short and Sky Captain Rizwan in a very sporting gesture kindly allowed a substitute fielder for Fazal, who could not get off work early.
Corsairs opening bowlers made maximum use of the new ball and did not give the Sky openers the opportunity to settle into a rhythm.
Laeeq bowled a superb spell, taking 3-14 in his 4 overs, in spite of Nimo dropping a regulation catch off him. Imran and Rizwan of Sky consolidated well for Sky with a mixture of airy drives and well-placed twos on the large outfield of Pitch 3.
Corsairs bowlers continued to bowl well to never give Sky the chance to unleash a final assault and Sky had to settle for a gettable 116-5 in their allotted 16 overs. Imran was the pick of the Sky batsmen with an excellent 47 runs.
Traditional Corsairs got off to a solid start aided by some good running between the wickets by Faisal and Vaseem, even though Shahid Ali bowled some tricky leg-breaks, finishing with 1-18 off 4 overs including a rare Victoria Park maiden!
Sky bowling was tight enough for Corsairs to have to bat through to the 16th over, but sensible batting and good running between the wickets ensured that the Corsairs got the required total with 3 balls to spare with skipper Nimo making up for his earlier drop catch with a steady 41 not out.
The game was played in excellent spirits and Sky skipper Rizwan is to be congratulated for his sportsmanship to allow Corsair's late arrival to bowl earlier than the rules normally allow and to allow Corsairs batsmen to correct their own scorer who missed two runs in the penultimate over.
Such gestures are a credit to Victoria Park cricket and epitomise the community-based philosophy of the competition.
