Caledonian Conquerors tied with Island Community
Caledonian Conquerors won the toss and chose to bat first
Caledonian Conquerors: 154 for 5 in 16 overs
Waqar Ali 28
Amir Khan 43
Zulfiqar Mohammed 37
Joe Tousent 3 overs 17 runs 1 wicket
Ravi Ramanuja 3 overs 34 runs 1 wicket
Mo Rahman 4 overs 27 runs 1 wicket
Island Community: 154 for 3 in 16 overs
Joe 50*
Shakoor Raja 4 overs 22 runs for 1 wicket
Waqar Ali 4 over 24 runs 1 wicket
Cally's and the Islanders are both vying for the runners-up spot of the
2009 season. Starting equal on points before this fixture, 32 overs of
sublime cricket could still not separate these 2 stalwarts of the VPCCL.
Cally's elected to bat on a dry and warm evening. Waqar Ali 28 and Mohammed
Nadeem 11 gave Cally's a good start, but some good bowling changes by Island
meant Cally's were pegged back to a par score of 154. Amir Khan impressed in
the middle of the Cally's innings scoring a blistering 43 before being clean
bowled by Ravi Ramanuja.
Cally's bowlers started well, but having all 7 wickets intact by the 8th
over meant Island were always going to be in the game. Island lost 2 quick
wickets and suddenly Cally's looked favourites, but some clean hitting by
Jack Stollery and Mo Rahman brought Island on the verge.
Needing 37 to win off the last 3 overs, the Islanders dispatched 18 runs off
the 14th over, Cally's looked like they had handed the game to Island.
With 8 runs taken off the 15th over, Island needed 11 runs to win off Waqar
Ali's death over.
Mo Rahman clipped the first ball over the keepers head for 4 and then
scrambled 4 runs of the next 2 deliveries. 3 to win off the last 3 balls
-surely Island had the game in the bag !
Waqar Ali bowled a dot ball and Island scrambled a single of the penultimate
delivery. 2 were needed off the last ball. Ali beat the bat again but the
attempted run out brought memories of Australia v South Africa from the 1999
World Cup. Island Community were relieved to have scrambled the single to
tie the game. The best game of the season, well done guys !!
A game that
neither side deserved to lose so a draw was a fair result. Played in good
spirits and mutual respect from both teams.
