The Final game of the 2011 First Division was not the usual dead rubber at
the end of an uneventful season. This game was the finale to the closest run
title race for the VPCCL in years.
Sky, Dynamite Ducks, Callys and London Fields were still in the hunt for a
Championship winning tally of points before today's game. The league would
ultimately be decided by the dreaded 'Rule 20'
Could London Fields come from nowhere and 'do a Spurs' to claim the league?
Cally's knew a win would see them equal on points, with Sky and Ducks and a
possible runner up berth for the league, so there was all to play for.
With Newsnight watching - doing a piece on inner city Cricket, both teams
seemed to rise to the occasion and produce a thriller of a final game for
the TV cameras. If anyone is interested VPCCL will be featured in next
Monday night's Newsnight (22/08/11). London Fields won the toss and
surprisingly opted to Field.
With several enforced Changes due to unforeseen circumstances, Cally's
player/manager Saj Rehman had to shuffle the team, as The current skipper
and top scorer Fazal Mohammed was unable to take time off work and in form
Batsman Kashif Malik taken ill - the Cally's team had to bring in last
minute replacement Yaser Ali and a fit again Shahid Mohammed into the
starting 8. Nadeem and Arshad Started out quickly taking 20 in the first 2
overs, but Nadeem hauled out to Skinner and was caught at Mid off.
Arshad was joined by brother Shahid and they went after the London Fields
bowlers with intent. When Shahid was stumped the Cally's looked like they
were going to fold very quickly. With the London Fields keeper in lightening
form (sorry did not catch his name) Cally's batting went from sublime to
disarray in 3 overs as 'Supergloves' London Fields Keeper stumped 4 Cally's
players. Callys were 90 for 5 in 10 overs.
Cally's rallied in the last three overs as Ali and Rehman put on a 35 run
partnership for the 6th wicket to post a par score of 128 on Pitch 3. London
Fields started brightly, but Yasser Ali was a good last minute replacement
to the team, as he blew away the London Fields with debut figures of 4 for
19 in less than 4 overs.
Will Isaacs and Chris Skinner were taking the attack to Cally's but with
wickets falling around them London Fields were bowled out for 71 in the 12th
over.
Thanks London Fields for a great game and we wish you all the best for next
season, welcome to the Top five!
